<h5>Mutualism</h5>
<h3>How Biomimicry Can Launch Innovations</h3>
<p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeyguide">Honeyguides</a> are the birds that talk to people. Also known as indicator birds <strong>(<em>family <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_honeyguide">Indicatoridae</a></em>)</strong> and predominantly found in Africa and Asia, these pale bellied, pink billed species get most of their food and nutrients from the eggs, larvae, and beeswax found in a bees nest. However, the only way these honey-craving creatures can access their food is by dragging humans to a nest, having said humans subdue the bees through smoke, and then crack into the nest with their big human hands.</p>
<p>To alert the humans, the Honeyguides use a distinctive whistling sound to draw them to the bees nest. This isn’t a selfless act on behalf of humans by any means, who will pillage and take all the honey they possibly can Winnie the Pooh style (it is said the Hadza tribe in Tanzania attributes 10% of their food from honey thanks to the help of the Honeyguides). However, once the humans are gone and with the bees subdued, the Honeyguides are left to dine out on the larvae, eggs, and beeswax.</p>


<h3>From Birds To Bees-iness</h3>
<p>Mutualism is defined as a symbiotic relationship where all species involved benefit from their interactions, and the working together of Honeyguides and humans is as good a mutualistic interaction as there is on the planet.</p>
<p>This notion of mutualism is at the core of so much of what we do at <a href="https://ecogreen.com.au/philosphy-of-better">Ecogreen</a>, and a vision for the future that we aspire to. Well, it is aspirational but also incredibly necessary. Partnering and collaboration through creativity and knowledge is an essential step towards a sustainable planet.</p>
<p>Ecogreen have a vision to build a hive of interconnected businesses that work together to achieve separate goals, while also contributing to each other’s projects. And we are very proud to announce our first steps towards creating this ecosystem of businesses with our own shared co-operative facility.</p>


<h3>Applied Mutualism</h3>
<p>Whether that be combining resources to increase production and minimise consumption (on not having to purchase new equipment for instance), to minimising land by sharing spaces and technologies, we must partner together on all fronts; our ideas, our IP, our technologies, our transportation, and our geography.</p>
<p>Ecogreen have a vision to build a hive of interconnected businesses that work together to achieve separate goals, while also contributing to each other’s projects. And we are very proud to announce our first steps towards creating this ecosystem of businesses with our own shared co-operative facility.</p>


<p>We are starting this journey of mutualism by sharing our current work premises with two other companies – DGR, which are a liquid filling company (currently in the process of setting up here), and AGV, who specialise in algae species and applications. <em>[Acronym&#8217;s used for privacy while each gets their house in order]</em></p>
<p>With DGR, we have configured an optimal warehouse design for them and will gradually be introducing them to lean six sigma methods to optimise efficiency and reduce waste. The arrangement involves combining our equipment with theirs to almost double their output capacity, which allows us to repurpose and refurbish our existing equipment rather than upgrade to new ones and waste resources.</p>
<p>Ecogreen are supporting the commercialisation of 15 years of scientific research across a range of algae species and applications, which is what makes Ecogreen and AGV the perfect match. We use AGV products that are compatible with our existing low impact packaging, filled by DGR, sold through our website, and connected to our partners. From laboratory installation and bio-reactor design, all the way to viability models, we have been with AGV every step of the way.</p>


<h3>Mutualism: Ecogreen &amp; AGV</h3>
<p>In exchange for all this, AGV will join us as a profit-for-purpose business, working with us through joint venture research to develop next gen sustainable and regenerative products, which will be a major component in our project technology.</p>
<p>Sharing a facility with both DGR and AGV also means we’ve completely cut out transport when it comes to contract filling, and severely reduced transport for everything else. We also now leave a much smaller land foot print, coordinating three businesses in a space that was designed for two.</p>


<h3 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Profit-for-Purpose</strong></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">AGV will join Ecogreen as a profit-for-purpose business, our collective resources will be used to develop new sustainable materials, regenerative products and advance our Projects.</h3>


<p>We love science and are so excited to create some top tier regenerative products with our new friends. For us, so much of this is about close co-operative research and product development &#8211; sharing our knowledge towards developing new knowledge. However, Ecogreen is all about the big picture, and we cannot lose sight of why we brought us all together in the first place; as components in large scale solutions to reshape and regenerate, and to turn an impact crater into a forest lake.</p>
<p>Much like the honeyguides and the humans, and countless other species in this big wide world of hours, we truly need each other to survive. We can’t do this separately, it has to be a collective effort. We are trying to lead by example at Ecogreen, to work with people in the truest sense of the word. It all starts with the sharing of everything, from ideas to technologies and space. This is the only way it’ll work, and the first place we need to start.</p>

<h3>What is the Ecoscale™?</h3>
<p>The Ecoscale™ is an evolving, methodical, and constantly developing standard to summarise estimated environmental impact potential of our products based on four areas; packaging, transport, ingredients, and environmental impacts.</p>
<p>The Ecoscale™ is by no means a perfect metric. There are too many variables within the chain of manufacturing that make it almost impossible to guarantee a definitively 100% sustainable product. We know that, and we don’t shy away from it. Rather, the Ecoscale™ is a tool designed to assist businesses and consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions, provide guidance and a process of continuous improvement, prevent complacency, and set a standard that others can follow.</p>


<p>Think of products on a scale of varying footprints on the planet. Single-use bottles, disposable batteries, plastic cutlery and plates are like Shaquille O’Neal size 23 basketball boots, while reusable stainless steel straws, bees wax food wraps, and bamboo toilet paper are tiny size 4 ballerina slippers that barely make an imprint on the ground.</p>
<p>Our aim with the Ecoscale™ is to give consumers and businesses a clear and concise visualisation of our products footprints; every size, every groove, and every callous. We want to be forthright into what goes into the development and manufacturing of our products, covering all areas from ingredients and where they are sourced, to how the product is transported. We want to let you know where we are, where we are going, and how we plan to get there.</p>


<h3>The Scale Itself</h3>
<p>Every single one of the products we produce sits somewhere on the Ecoscale™, from our <a href="https://ecogreen.com.au/products/silk-hand-sanitiser">Silk Hand Sanitiser</a> and <a href="https://ecogreen.com.au/products/rem-gold">REM Gold</a> (waste water remediation), to our <a href="https://ecogreen.com.au/products/food-waste-treatment">Food Waste Treatment Solution</a> and <a href="https://ecogreen.com.au/products/alcohol-free-surface-disinfectant">Alcohol-Free Surface Cleaner</a>.</p>
<p>Each of these products have a separate <strong>Container Rating</strong>, <strong>Transport Rating</strong>, and <strong>Ingredients Rating</strong>, with these 3 ratings combining to produce an <strong>Overall Rating</strong>. From there, this Overall Rating is placed on the Ecoscale™ itself, giving consumers a completely transparent look at the product’s footprint, as well as what needs to be done to improve the product so it can move along the scale.</p>
<p>So what is the actual scale of the Ecoscale™ (trying saying that five times fast)? We’re glad you asked. There are 6 markers on the Ecoscale™, ranging from ‘High Impact’ being the least sustainable, to ‘Pinnacle’ being the most sustainable. You can explore each category by clicking the tabs below:</p>


<h3>An Example</h3>
<p>Let’s use our <strong><a href="https://ecogreen.com.au/products/cleanair">CleanAir</a> </strong>anti-bacterial air freshener as an example. CleanAir uses sap, bark, herbs, flowers, and algae extract to control indoor odours.</p>
<p>Put on the Ecoscale™, CleanAir has an overall rating which sits on ‘Transitional’, with the overall rating an average of Transport, Ingredients, and Container ratings. We know CleanAir isn’t a perfect product, and have listed a number of areas that can be improved on for it to move up on the scale. These include sourcing biodegradable plastic without the inlay, sourcing more local materials to limit marine impact, and developing a compatible refill solution to significantly reduce shipping.</p>
<p>Our target rating for CleanAir is to be closer to the ‘Eco-responsible’ marker. If we make significant improvements in a number of areas, we may very well push CleanAir towards ‘Eco-responsible’. Conversely, if we sit back and do nothing and not try and improve this product, over time CleanAir may slide back on the scale.</p>
